Role Overview
Location: Remote (US-based preferred) Type: Contract Team: Platform Engineering / Infrastructure Start: ASAP
Overview
We are looking for a contract engineer to help us migrate our monitoring and observability capabilities from Splunk (Cloud & Observability) to Azure-native monitoring services.
This engagement is not a lift-and-shift migration. Existing Splunk dashboards will not be migrated automatically. Instead, dashboards and monitoring views will be manually rebuilt from scratch using Azure tools.
Most dashboards are non-critical and used primarily for troubleshooting and investigation, not executive reporting or compliance.
What You'll Do
Review existing dashboards across: Splunk Cloud Search & Reporting
Splunk Observability
Help inventory and rationalize current dashboards (what's worth rebuilding vs. dropping)
Recreate dashboards manually in Azure using:
Azure Monitor
Log Analytics
Azure-native alerting and visualization tools
Work closely with internal platform and application teams to understand monitoring needs
Document newly created dashboards and monitoring patterns
Provide guidance on best practices when moving from Splunk concepts to Azure-native tooling
Important Context (Please Read)
There is no automated migration of dashboards
Historical Splunk data does not need to be migrated
Dashboards are nice-to-have, not business-critical
This role is focused on migration and setup, not long-term ownership or day-to-day monitoring
We are early in the migration process, so adaptability and clear communication matter
Required Experience
Hands-on experience with Azure Monitor and Log Analytics
Prior experience working with Splunk dashboards or observability tools
Comfortable designing dashboards and alerts manually
Strong documentation and communication skills
Ability to work independently and make pragmatic decisions
Nice to Have
Familiarity with Azure Sentinel (awareness only; not the primary focus)
Experience advising teams during tool consolidation or platform transitions
Background in infrastructure or platform engineering environments
Engagement Details
Contract engagement with flexibility in hours
Light ramp-up initially, increasing as dashboards are rebuilt
Collaborative work with internal engineers who are also ramping up on Azure monitoring tools
Why This Role
This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys:
Practical, hands-on migration work
Designing clean, simple monitoring solutions
Helping teams modernize tooling without over-engineering
